With the great losses that have to be faced in

connexion with opium revenue, to say nothing

of losses resulting from the present distar-

bances in China, I do not see how the financial

position can possibly justify us in finding

from Govt. funds the salary of a Professor for

the University.

If the proposal is to be entertained, I should

much prefer the annual vote of a salary to

the vote of a large lump sum a salary can

at any rate be discontinued when a Professor

dies or quits office, and a large lump sum is

beyond the present means of the Colony. If a

salary is voted, sure'6,000 or 5,000 would be

ample. Professors can earn money by private

teaching, writing books &c.
